Is it possible to use an adapter cable, serial to usb on my old laptop.
Its a 166 mhz mmx pentium in a dell latitude xpi. The ads on ebay suggest 233mhz is the minimum. If not possible is there another way to connect usb?

"serial to usb" do not exist

"usb to serial" do exist

If the BIOS has an entry for USB and the Latitiude supports PCMCIA CardBus 32bit then it may be feasible to use a USB CardBus Adaptor which has a mains/dc power supply.

Look at the very first one. It has Multifunction Hub has One PS/2, One Serial, One Parallel Printer Ports with upstream USB to a USB connection.

Serial to USB does not exist.

Read the devices and ye will see.

First item on that page... dont just read the head lines. Go look at it.

It is a USB hub ... convering USB to serial/USB/parallel.

It seems most likely that PCMCIA CardBus is the way to go if my bios will support it.How do I find this out?

Now wasn't that fun!

Buz333, I think you have run into yrt another barrier. The only PCMCIA cards that provide USB seem to be 32 bit cards. A pentium 166 is very likely to have 16 bit slots. Check the specs on your computer at Dell's website before you buy.

We might be able to help you more (besides that rather humorous debate above) if you told us what you wanted to connect to.

buz33. I do not think the responses were hilarious just tiring when try to help you. Anyway to be brutally honest I think you will find that you are trying to attach to much to the Laptop.

Speedtouch Modem are power hungry - buy an external modem/router £25.00

PDA - see if they have a Serial Convertor available for the unit, easier than the other way round.

Scanner - look for a Parallel Port Version
