Hi there, im looking for help in installing a serial mouse on an ATX board using COM1. Ive installed it and its undetected even after enable/disable bios settings and even after manual i/o add change. I have com1 on irq 4 as it should be and i have tried removing it also but still no serial mouse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

My thought is that either the mouse is dead or you have a bent pin on the connector. If you could roundup a 9 pin t0 25 pin adapter you could try the mouse on com2.

hey hank, thanks for the quick reply, anyway, i checked the pins, their fine bud. Ive tried the mouse on com1 and com2 not only on my pc but also my laptop and no joy. Id love to use the ps2 option but i cant. The mouse is a ps2 mouse and i have an adapter on it to convert it to use a com port(pins are fine on this also). Why the adapter u ask, well i need it for a game called "settlers 2" and it demands a mouse on either com1 or com2 to play multiplayer using same screen. Now i have a infra-red mouse, a ps2 mouse and a usb optical mouse all connected fine but like i said , dam game wants a com port used cause all the other mice all control my pointer on my side of the screen if you follow me and pointer on right side just cant be controled. i spent 14 hours on this suka years ago but my sad ass has forgotten and i dont want to spen another 14 hours P.S.
Thanks again dude

As I have seen it before with my own experience and on Computing.net, serial mouse adapters just don't work. You need to put your hands on a real serial mouse. I've got at least 10 or 12 laying around here. And I pick them up new at the computer fair for about 3 bucks each. I even have a serial track ball. And like you I have more than one on each pc. My pc has no ps2 port. I caught it on fire (long story/stupid mistake). But my pc also wouldn't accept a serail on com1 or com2 from the mother board. So I yanked out one of my controller cards that has connections for floppy/IDE1/IDE2/com1/com2/printer/game controller. Once I got this connected my serial worked fine. My main mouse is USB, but even though I enable it in DOS it doesn't work in DOS so I can't use it to install windows. That is my reason for needing a serial mouse. So you see there are other ways around your mouse problem. If you want more help, or even a used serial mouse drop me a line.

I agree 100% with Terri. Those adapters rarely work unless they come with the mouse.
I wouldn't be surprised if you could get a local computer repair shop to give you a serial mouse for nothing.

In some instances devices such as these are not plug and pray (play). So you would have to get windows to go through its add/remove new hardware detect routine for it to find your serial mouse.
Have you done that?
