hi, i left a mesage on here about an hour ago and was successful in removing my about:blank virus. The se.dll file, however, stayed in my system 'temp' folder and i was worried if it would make my about:blank virus return. please could someone tell me what the 'se.dll' file is and how to remove it. thanks

thanks to every1 who has a spare bit of time to help other people on here!

Boot to Dos standalone and type:

del mc:\windows\temp\se.dll

or to delete all the files in the temp folder:

del c:\windows\temp\*.*

Start up the computer. Before the OS starts to load start tapping F8. A menu should come up. Choose 'command prompt only'. At the c:\> prompt type the command ham30 gave.

Someone recently posted a way to keep that file from ending up on a computer. Just create a folder in windows\temp and name it se.dll. Windows won't allow a folder and file with the same name in the same directory so consequently it won't allow the se.dll file to download. And since se.dll always seems to download to windows\temp that method should keep it off your computer.

This should work for any virus file that consistently downloads to a specific location.

Also, after noticing you've been infected, it's a good idea to shutdown and choose to restart in msdos mode. Then at the prompt type scanreg/restore and enter. Then choose a registry to restore with a date that precedes the problem. That registry you restore won't have any of the changes the virus may have made.

Removal tool

Download
http://www.derbilk.de/SpSeHjfix109.zip
for win 98

http://www.derbilk.de/SpSeHjfix112.zip"
for 2000/xp

to the desktop and then right-click a blank part of desktop & select new folder, call it spfix and unzip the file into that folder.

Disconnect from the net and close all open programs.
Go to safe mode.

Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
