I installed a used hard drive as a Secondary master to my system. When I turn on the 'puter the onboard boot sector virus protector warning beeps and buzzes and says there is an attempt to write to the boot sector. I have declined to allow it to continue. I ran McAfees latest dat file to check the whole system and it didn't find anything. This drive has now been fdisk /mbr and formatted and it still beeps every time it boots. Question: Is this a real problem or is this something set up badly? Jre...

I assume that the virus warning is coming from a program built into the bios. You might check to see if you have the latest bios update. I am not a virus expert, but I doubt that you have one unless it got into your bios.

Yes this is a bios built-in boot sector write warning to warn if any program or a virus attempts to write to the boot sector. I just have not had any other hard drives cause the warning to appear. I am real hesitant to allow it to write to the boot sector. If it is installed as a Secondary drive it shouldn't be attempting to write to a boot sector should it??? jer...

jer, You should NOT chose to "Continue - Yes" because it'll infect your Primary HD.
I've done it, and can't get rid of it. Now have three HD's infected. They won't take a reformat so are unusable.
We could use some help, here.
Thanks for any/all advice.

I have the identical problem. Yet it was a brand new Fujitsu hard drive. Anyone out there know how to kill it?

#3 is right. Preventing viruses is always desirable and that's what it's there for.
BUT for pete townsend: With a brand new hard drive, I'm pretty sure you need to write to the boot sector. I mean, you KNOW there's nothing there...it's brand new!
HERE'S WHAT TO DO: Restart your computer. Get into your BIOS (hit del, or whatever during startup). Look for anything like "Boot Sector Virus Warning". Look for the option to enable/disable. Choose Disable. Exit from the BIOS (maybe F10)and boot to your startup disk. You might want to revist the BIOS the next time you have to restart to reset the virus warning to "ON".
Good Luck. This worked for me.

I have a similar problem, i can format the drive, "see the diskspace" but i cant write to it no matter what! Is this a hardware case or virus?

I have the same problem except it is with my primary boot sector write "Virus???. I can not boot or reload my windows. The problem all started when I tried to install a Read/Write CD Rom. I have tried everthing with no luck. This drive is about 1.5 years old and it a 4.3 GB drive. Anyone have anymore idears.

Hello,This has worked for me. It might work well for you too. It may damage some hardrives only use this when all else has failed
-----You have been warned----I typicaly remove the small coin shaped cmos battery and move the jumper that controls the bios. (A 3 pin jumper on my motherboard)
ERASE HDD AND CLEAR CMOS
Before doing the below routine insure that you read our disclaimer as well as are sure that this is safe to do on your hard drive. Some computer hard drive manufacturers may void your warranty or this may cause damage to the hard drive when doing the following. This routine is useful in clearing DDO and removing possible viruses. If this routine completes successfully it will erase everything from your Hard drive as well as your reset your CMOS values.
In the following debug routine only type what is in bold from line 3 to 17 you will get a response if it corresponds with the following type the text after the response without putting in a space between the response and what you type in.
A:\>debug
-fcs:200 400 0
-acs:100
-xxxx:0100 mov ax, 0
-xxxx:0103 mov ax, cx
-xxxx:0105 out 70, al
-xxxx:0107 mov ax, 0
-xxxx:010a out 71,al
-xxxx:010c inc cx
-xxxx:010d cmp cx,100
-xxxx:0111 jb 103
-xxxx:0113 mov ax,302
-xxxx:0116 mov bx,200
-xxxx:0119 mov cx,1
-xxxx:011c mov dx,80
-xxxx:011f int 13
-xxxx:012l int 20
-xxxx:0123(without typing anything.)

program terminated normally
If you are doing this debug routine to clear out a possible virus turn off your computer and wait and turn back on.
-q
Once back at DOS reboot your computerWhen your computer comes back on from doing the above you will get an error message as booting up the computer such as "Invalid Configuration" you must enter CMOS and set the time and date save and reboot again. Once rebooted you will then need to run fdisk and recreate the partition(s). Once created you will then need to format the hard drive and proceed as normal.

I am getting an error that says
"Trend CHIPAWAY Virus Detected....ON GUARD!!!
Chipawayvirus BIOS Version 1.62".My CMOS throws this message up when it does it's routine scan. I have tried FDISK /MBR, but that didn't work. What do I need to do?

I have a similar experience/ I bought a brand new Twinhead Notebook recently and noticed that it was taking very long installing Microsoft Office 2000 (Small Business Edition). Live Update of Norton 2000 Antivirus kept on disconnecting half-way so I decided to do "fdisk" and do Windows 98 Recovery from the Recovery CD. This is when I noticed the virus.
Fdisk did not solve the problem. Reformatting the hard disk did not solve the problem. Virus scanning with Norton Anti Virus, Trend PCCillin and McAfee did not detect any virus. But the message persistently appear at the end of FDisk and Windows Recovery.
I am wondering how a brand new notebook can have such a problem. The manufacturer should ensure that such defects are not present.
I am anxiously looking for some explanation and solution. Meanwhile, I am sending the Notebook back to the shop to have the problem solved.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
