I've been having repeated problems with my Asus P2B motherboard, even after bios updates, reinstallation of Windows 98 SE, updating of drivers, and any of the typical things one would try first.

Under HD controllers within Device Manager, I have an exclamation point on "Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)", reading "This device is either not present, not working, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10) Try upgrading the device drivers for this device." I have tried drivers from all Windows CDs and Microsoft online, with no luck. There are no resource conflicts, and the HD is properly detected in Bios autoconfig of drives. I've also tried other settings in the Bios with the same problems. I've tried swapping the HD with another.

PII-400MHz computer, custom-built.
Secondary IDE drive - Western Digital 3.1 Gb HD, detected properly in BIOS as that. It's alone on that cable. I have a HD and CD-ROM on the primary.

The drive works within the command prompt and Win98 SE ok, but is kind of sluggish. I assume it's related to the problem.

Thanks for any help.

did you check the slave/master pins on
the physical drives? make sure that your
master HD is set to master and that your
slave is set to slave. Also make sure that
your second HD is on the last plug on the
IDE cable and set to master.
You may also try switching your cd and
your second HD. put your boot HD on the
primary IDE cable as master and your
second HD as slave. put your CD on
secondary IDE as master. this may work.
I have two HD's and two CD's.
Primary IDE: boot HD/master; second
HD/slave
Secondary IDE: CDRW/master;
CD-rom/slave
may help...

Dan,

Did you ever get an answer to the problem with the secondary IDE controller?

I have the same exact problem with the same motherboard.

Nothing seems to work to correct this. The computer has been working fine in the same configuration for over a year!!

Karen
