question is what will happen if I put a 133mhz ram memory chip in a 100 mhz bus type pc or can't I. and is the (100mhz and 133mhz on the memory chip the bus speed that they talk about on the mother board front side buss speed I hope you know what I'm talking about. just want to know I want to add more memory and not sure what type it takes the bus speed on the pc is 100 and it has a 64 meg memory chip in it now and i want to put in a 256 memory chip. so do i buy a 100mhz chip or can i buy a 133 chip and it will work ok or not ?
Thanks for helping out.

The Motherboard of some PCs will 'tolerate'installing a PC 133 SDRAM module replacing its PC100 SDRAM or along with with its existing PC100 module , but in that case both will function as PC100.

Some Mob are very specific about the Speed and wouldn't recognize the added PC133 Module or even freezeup after the installation.

The best way to decide about the amount and type of RAM is to 'plugin' the PC or Motherboard Specifications to a Memory Configurator of a reputable Memory Vendor like WWW.CRUCIAL.COMand get the instructions.

You're not supplying enough information. In many cases, PC133 is backwards compatible with PC100...but in others, it's not. It depends on your motherboard. Many older boards will not accept "high density" RAM & most manufactured today IS high density. You may have to specifically order "low density" RAM for your system, especially if you wanna use 256mb modules. Also, if you have an older socket 7 board, it's usually not recommended to install more than 64mb of RAM in the 1st place because you will exceed the cache limit...doing so will actually slow your system in most cases. Do you have the manual for your motherboard or know what make/model it is? Post back that info & someone will be able to give you a solid answer...right now, anything I say is just a guess...

HI

Download a copy (free) ct'spd. It is one of the better ram spd utilities.

pc100 SDRAM. IF YOU DO GET pc133 MAKE SURE YOU STIPULATE it MUST be backwars compatable. [Suprisingly some pc133 only functions correctly at fbs (front bus speed) of 133MHz.]

I would also be inclined to use 2 128MB sdram sticks. [I say that as some machines weren't configured to handle some of the large sdram sticks about these days.]

What you use really depends on your machine and what you want it to do.

You can put a 256-133 ram chip in your system
but it will run at 131 megs. Stick with the
proper chip speed. P.C. 100 is obsolite
and not cheap. You might want to think about
getting a new mother board that will accept
the pc133. Your going to have to sooner
or later. One question, though. How do you
have 189 megs of ram when you have " one 64
meg chip in it now ". Must be a typo. Good
luck on your venture.
