screensaver not starting

When my screensaver should come on at the appointed time (eg 1 min delay) the computer makes a "whiring " noise as if the screensaver is trying to start but it does not. All suggestions gratefully received & thank you in advance. Nigel

To jkelly - thank you for your response platform is w95 memory 64k i've tried several screensavers , eg 3d pipes, after dark this is a recent phenomenon (sceesaver used to come on ok)
