Comment:
I just reformatted my hard drive and installed win98se and the screen resolution setting in the displayed panel won't work but the color setting works fine. In the device manager there is no yellow question mark at all. What is wrong?

You need the drivers for the graphics card - windows is using it's own default drivers which only work at low resolutions

Usually if you have forgotten to install the video drivers, you will be limited to 640 x 480 resolution and 16 colours. This is the standard VGA display. Yet you say the colours are fine.
Try double clicking on the device with the yellow question mark. It should then tell you what is wrong.

You won't get a yellow question mark if you are using the Windows default (Standard) adapter. You need to install the correct driver for your adapter.

I installed " everest home edition" to find about what video driver is needed and download the driver. I still can't get the screen resolution to work but I can get all the colors

It does sound like you have either installed the wrong driver or there is some screwy mismatch with your monitor.
Which adaptor did Everest tell you that you have and where did you obtain the drivers?

It says that I have a SIS530 adapter and I downloaded the driver from the SIS site.

It might be worth downloading the driver again. It is always possible to click on one wrong link and end up with a driver that is close. Data corruption does occasionally happen too.
