Recently I have been receiving the "this program has performed an illegal operation..." warning. The specifics are that scanregw caused an invalid page fault in scanregw.exe. This appears right after windows finishes loading. I don't see any other problems. (The system runs fine.)I replaced scanregw with my OS copy but still get the same warning. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
John

Shut down and restart in MS-DOS mode, then type scanreg /fix
Type exit to restart windows. Usual Return key after all DOS commands.
If this doesn't work you could try scanreg /restore instead and choose a date just before the problem came along. You would have to re-install any software you added since that time and install/uninstall anything you have taken out.
It doesn't sound like a virus to me (although it never hurts to check), but Bob might know something that I don't....

Hi Bob/Derek,
Well, after I posted this I got other error messages and problems. I couldn't run regedit without it freezing. I started receiving errors about XMS memory problems and not being able to find Himem.sys. I tried rebuilding the registry, and it froze. Then it finally wouldn't boot into windows, citing a protection fault. So, I removed my camera, my secondary, IDE, drive (My main drive is a scuzzi.), my CD burner, and reseated my ram. After that I was able to get into windows, upon which I ran a few of my cleanup utilities, and the problem went away. I have not re hooked up the secondary drive, nor the burner. I'll let you know if I have the problem again. Thanks for your help.

... hmm, I should have thought of that one. Bad RAM (or its contacts) can often cause registry error reports. I feel certain that reseating the RAM was what cured it.
If it should happen again clean the RAM edge connectors with a pencil eraser and pop the sticks in and out a few times to clear any tarnish on the sockets themselves.
If you have more than one RAM stick it should run on just one, which would prove the point if one RAM stick is actually failing.

Hi Derek,
I tried all the various sticks in combinations, there are 4, and was never able to find a faulty one. So, I'm also inclined to suspect that reseating them did it.
