I don't think you can. That was not an option with the Windows 95 Operating Sytstems.

Hi mesich. I have not successfully tranfered a scanreg program to a win95 pc yet, but I have been able to run the scanreg.exe/fix and the basic scanreg.exe from the floppy boot disk on a win95 pc. I never attempted to copy it into the C:\windows\command folder, but Derek said that it didn't work, so I guess he did try.

Derek along with Dave357 and yourself are very knowlegable.

I have never attempted this myself as I stated but I have a small hard drive that I shall try it out on.

Will post back very soon.

Thanks for the info.

I know part of the story. What you don't do is just copy over the W98 .exe file.

I tried this once and it was fine on several machines until it got in a tiz doing scanreg /fix and promptly tried to restore the W95 registry W98 style.

All hell broke out but I managed to fix it only because I had kept spare registries using a batch file copy/paste arrangement I invented (and still use).

BUT on these very pages I found a proper way to do it by copying several files and registry entries. I will try to find the posting then pop back. Someone around here knows how......

Hi Derek,

Is it not the link above in response #2?

Hey mesich you beat me again. What brand of ale are you on please?

Yes it was indeed that one - I was just about to copy/paste a text version of it that I'd eventually found lurking in my data base.

I've never tried it but it looked a whole lot more promising. Dave357 is a very reliable poster so he may well have tested it.

For 100% certainty I suppose you would need to build up some registries then attempt to restore an oldie.

Hi again everyone,

I just got finished loading Win95 and checking out running scanreg/restore.

After fixing the Windows Protection errors during setup and then following the link in response #2 I did several backups of the registry.

I then ran scanreg/restore with success.

Nice tip Dave357.

Derek,
They are ice cold Corona's, very tasty. :)

Terri,
Keep up the very wonderful work on your website. The help pages are great and I really like the personal page.

Thanks mesich. See I told you Derek knew all about scanreg and win95. He is the one that kept me from crashing my machine by trying to just copy/paste it in place.
I still have lots to do on my site. I lost some links when it crashed a week or so ago. And still lots more to come on personal pages. Working on a page of grandbaby pictures to go up next. Thanks again. I really couldn't of done any of it without my good friends here at Computing.net.

Thx Terri but to be fair mesich was already on the button with this one (as often) - just a pity I overlooked the URL he'd posted.

Still, it's sometimes handy to have on record the way NOT to do it! Does that make me an expert LOL?

Someone once told me that "experience" is getting it wrong and never doing it that way again - probably about right....

Yes Derek, that makes you an expert. At least as far as I'm concerned. Sometimes you do more by "accident" than I do on purpose. I have to look up to anyone who hasn't formatted in how ever many years it has been for you now. Hey how bout some new pictures coming my way? I'm working on putting mine up so everyone can see them. And I have really learned how to master the photo programs now with all these pictures of my grandaughter everywhere. Became an expert at turning a wallet size into an 8x10.
But anyway, you're still tops in my book.

Thanks for the info guys - after successfully importing msconfig to my '95 machine, I thought I might give scanreg a go as well - didn't realize that there was a registry mod.

Been using various third party software (System Mechanic, Fix-it Utilities, RegCleaner), but it's always nice to have a command line option.

Mesich, thanks for testing it out. I had found the tip on another forum, but had never actually tried it myself. Glad to see that it actually works. :)

You wouldn't happen to have an extra Corona there, would ya?

Cheers.

On second thought.....

Yes, I have put scanreg onto a Win95 box. I just haven't had to use it yet (thankfully).

Maybe I don't need that Corona after all. :)

Hey Mesich you might get real money for that 486 with such a monster drive.

The 486 my grandkids play their little games on has a 270k HD (that's not a mis-print). I keep a CD in it to get it up to equivalent 1 gig.

I'm on Singapore Tiger btw.

Derek,

I just checked out the Singapore Tiger on the web. Think I'll see if I can't get some of those today.

How's about I trade the hard drive for a six pack of Singapore Tiger. :)

Sounds like a pretty good deal.

I can seriously recommend that Tiger, you definitely won't be dissapointed if you try it. The sad fact is that when I was conscripted to Singapore, aged 18, I was 200% teatotal. Yet I still remember that "time for a tiger" slogan. Aah...missed opportunities...

What is it they say - youth is wasted on the young?
