Got sort of two questions:

#1 Got a Win 95 computer, that I need to restore the registry within. The one currently showing up seems to be partial, and not everything shows nor is acessible. Does Win 95 have such a feature? I did some searching, and can find zero on SCANREG. It is well pointed out on my Win 98 computer, but can I do sme in 95?

95 doesn't have scanreg. You have to back up the registry and you have to restore it.

If you don't have a backup and the problem is with windows, an over the top install of Win95 is likely the only way to go. If the problem is with some other program, reinstall the offending program.

When you get it sorted out, make a backup of the registry and save it on a disk or cd.

I got about 1/2 dozen old disks here, all of which have Back-up noted on them someplace. Awfull lot of files on them going back to 1996 in few instances.

But...

Just how could I identify a back-up file one I get the disk to read out? What sort of file ot what sort of extension should I look for?

"and not everything shows nor is acessible" What is missing, and what access errors are you receiving?

Wm, you're looking for 2 files.

system.dat
user.dat

They're usually too large to put on a diskette. If anyone has ever done a registry backup, they might be on the hard drive somewhere.

Do a search (entire hard disk) for the files. The ones you find in c:\windows are not the back ups.

If no joy, do another search for user.* in case a backup was done and the file renamed. Common extensions for backup files might be something like

User.bak
User.old
User.001

They will not be .sys .ini .dll .com or other system type extensions.

But first, answer jennifers question. What's it doing to you?

The registry files are the same as W98:
System.dat
User.dat

W95 keeps one backup copy:
System.da0
User.da0

Unfortunately W95 overwrites the registry backups after each good boot, so the da0 files tend to be very recent and a bit useless.

some other bloke...

You are right. I don't think they would ahve fit on to floppy disk. I found a couple copies of those .DAT files. One of 50 meg, and another of 100 meg. Wonder what was being saved back when?

Jen...

Last night it was working OK. This morning, things have changed.

When I hit START

then got to PROGRAMS

Well, I then get about 1/3 of what used to be present then showing as available programs to run.

I can still go to the old way of START

then RUN,

and then look around for what I want to run, and it works.

But, it does not get added to the Program list nor will an Icon get created for running.

The restore Registry was told (and noted) as being fastest way to get back to yesterday settings. I mention this for way back when (just before a hard drive pooped out) the above noted restore was the way in 98 to get back to where I was at.

It's not going to help with your current situation but you can copy the scanreg files from 98 to 95 and then edit the registry to create a backup on startup.

Is this the computer that your neighbor gave you? Why don't you just wipe it & start from scratch?

Jam...

One main thing I can think of off the top of my head is that the freebie computer came with a scanner. It has the scanner drivers all loaded up and going just fine. The disks given to me contain errors, and then will not load onto another computer. The drivers already on the freebie computer cannot be duplicated also. I can find duplicate drivers onna internet, but says to delete the old ones first before new ones can be installed. OK, but then says there is some trace element existing so whole operation has to be cancelled.

The extra options work OK on the freebie, but is a pain right now to get them to work on it.

Download all the necessary drivers in advance...chipset, audio, video, scanner, etc & copy them to a CD. Wipe the HDD, do a clean install of Win95, then install all the drivers & other software that you wanna use.
