I have looked in my windows command file and find that I have scandisk.exe and also scandisk.alt. I am receiving an error when Norton is analyzing my DOS boot record at boot up and it is an error with scandisk.alt. I am having all kinds of problems with my computer. It is running exceedingly slow and sometimes hangs at the c prompt when booting and does not shut down properly either. Does anyone have any ideas what's going on here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like another scandisk program is running during boot, the above link should help.

Best way to get rid of such problems is to format the HDD and reinstall the OS, but another try is to remove Norton from the system as I don't have the file scandisk.alt
and still the system goes smooth.
And the other problems like shutdowns, boot errors, etc can be solved by cleaning the HDD once and reinstalling the Os(win 98).

EnJoy !

Hi, You not need to reinstall de OS or Norton Utilities. By any reinstalation of OS or other aplication you update Win.com has been reeplaced. The Norton Utilities updates the Win.com file to run the Norton Disk Doctor (Ndd.exe) utility when Windows 95/98 is shut down improperly.
SOLUTION: Undelete or try to find in other PC the update Win.com, rename you Win.com to Win.old and copy the new Win.com (from Norton) to C:\Windows\
Other solution: cd\windows\command
copy ndd.exe scandisk.alt
