I have windows 95 and I can't run Defrag or scandisk on my C drive. Works fine on D & E drive.

Make a Win 95 Boot Disk by going into Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs Icon->Startup Disk. Insert your Win 95 Disk into your CD ROM drive (you may be asked for it). Make a copy of SCANDISK.exe and put it on the diskette. Insert Diskette in Drive A and reboot. Choose the DOS prompt selection. At the A prompt type:
SCANDISK C:
That should do it.

What happens when you try to run scandisk? After 10 mins do you get a "scandisk has restarted 10 times, a program is writing to the disk"?

have exactly the same problem. Get the message that Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. I've quit everything. I've gone into ctrl-alt-del and ended every task. Nothing works. Everytime I restart scandisk it goes for awhile and then says it has been interrupted and has to start over ten times. Any help would be great.

Didn't read far enough. The answer is there. Ending all but explorer and systray tasks then running scandisk from DOS prompt got me through it. Thanks.

I have the same problem and can comoplete Scandisk via DOS. But I still don't understand why it gives the "10 times" message and stops in Win 95 (screensaver and all tasks except explorer and systray).

Also have same problem and same message. All tasks shut down except Explorer and systray as suggested. Is it a bug?
