DIR00001 is a directory name given by a file recovery program. It indicates that you've either erase data in the past and tried to recover it or scandisk (or similar software) found damaged directories and tries to restore it using the DIR00001 name. I'd suggest you boot into a DOS window, and use the deltree /y c:\dir00001 command to erase that directory. It is probably useless anyway unless you do something special on your computer. What else is in that directory besides the 555*.555 file?

I have experienced the exact same problem over the past 2 days. Both times, I had started the Norton Anti-Virus (I just downloaded the latest version on Sunday). Yesterday I finally rebooted under DOS and deleted DIR00001. It looked like it worked, but this morning I had the same problem. I'm still working on a fix.

I am a pc administrator, and we are having the same scandisk problem. We run Norton AV well, and the problems have cropped up immediately after pushing the new virus definitions to all PCs. I've contacted Norton and am waiting for an answer. I'll post the resolution as soon as i get it.

Norton has posted on thier web page that their def. download dated 6-16 or 6-19 had problems and caused these problems. They suggest downloading the latest definitions dated 6-22, and the lock-ups and scandisk errors will stop. Here's the link:
