While trying to run scandisk, I get the following window…
“scandisk has restarted 10 times because windows or another program has been writing to
this drive”after a few minutes this message repeats again, and again, and again,....
Turning off VirusScan and Quarterdeck doesn't seem to help the situation.
How do I get rid of it so I can finish running Scandisk?

Turn off the screen saver and power management everytime they start scandisk will start over because the hard drive is being accessed.

If that doesn't work, press ctrl+alt+del and end task everything exect explorer and systray. You may have some TSR's running that you don't know about which will also make scandisk restart.

I also have a Scandisk problem......every time I start up the computer or reboot, Scandisk runs. Is there somewhere I can set something so it only runs after an incorrect shutdown?

Scandisk will only run when a shut down has not been performed properly.... which tends to imply that your system is having a problem shutting down. This can occur when you have a multi-partitioned hard disk, or any device errors / bad SCSI temrinations. Try checking the Device Manager in Control Panel > System to see if any of your hardware is conflicating. If the problem still persists, try removing your peripherals one by one and starting up / shutting down.

Scandisk only completes about 30% of a scan and then stops responding. All applications are shut down at the time.

I was having the Scandisk restart problem, even in Safe Mode. I went into the Control Panel, opened Power, clicked on Disk Drives, and unchecked the When Powered by AC Power box. I clicked apply, received a blue screen, pressed Enter, closed Power Properties, and successfully ran scandisk.
