when i do scandisk, it keeps restarting on "checking file allocation table.....", is it the cause for slow boot-up? what's the problem for that? help needed urgently.

Hi gerard.
Are you running SCANDISK while in DOS mode?
You should never run SCANDISK, Norton Disk Editor or any disk repair utility from in a DOS window from a DOS prompt while in Windows. These programs can cause serious damage to your hard drive if a Windows program tries to access the hard disk at the same time. To prevent these and other problems, exit windows first and then run the DOS utility.

press ctrl+alt+del and end tasl everything except explorer and systray: Also syop your screen saver from running. You don't have any antivirus running - it would have crashed windows by now.

Don't worry about running Scandisk in a DOS window. Windows is smart emough to switch and run the Windows version.
If the ctl-alt-del doesn't work (since this does not show ALL running tasks), restart to SAFE mode and run scandisk from there.
