It's me again. Ever since I found the trojan virus and cleaned it up, I am experiencing all kinds of problems. Right now my problem is that when I try to run scandisk it locks up my compter when it reaches cluster 167,953 of 1,248,832 while scanning the data area. It will scan the system area fine without finding any errors. If I reboot to a DOS prompt and run from there will it still bomb out?

This has been a great learning experience for me by I want to get my computer back to normal.

you could try running scandisk from safemode or DOS but no gurantees, cause if it's a virus it might come up again

understand that scandisk takes a long time, you would have grown old by the time it's done...a good bet is to save all you important documents out then format your PC...

it could also be a HD error since it only freezes and certain spots...you could go to your HD manufacturer website and download the low level format tool that it provides...save it to a floppy

then insert in a windows startup disk and restart your computer...choose running windows98 with CD support then insert in the low level format disk inside and run the format tool

after the format insert the startup disk again and restart comp choose the same option to run win98 with CD support then go to your A: and type FDISK to create a primary partition for your HD

then get out of FDISK once partition is done then format your comp the normal way...in A: type format c: and follow the instructions

if you can't format your c: from a: look for the drive that has your dianostic tools loaded in show be either E: or F:...type format c: to format the c:

then restart(with startup disk in) and install win98 again...once win98 is back save all your important documents back...

but gotta warning ya...the low level format and the format will take up to about 3-4 hours depending on your system speed and also HD space

well by the time you finish the low level and normal format, you would have grown old also but hey, at least your comp is runnin' normally...whew! that's a lotta typing...

hope it helps,
Skwid
