I can't seem to do a scandisk to fix errors. I'm going to start>programs>accessories>system tools>scandisk. I start a standard test. When I hit start, it says "Checking file allocation tables", then "checking folders" and all I see is 2 yellow bars in the progress bars. Then the whole process keeps repeating and doesn't make any progress. I've waited 15 minutes and this keeps repeating. I also tried to defragment my hard drive but it keeps saying "drive's content changed: restarting..." and doesn't make progress either. I'm wondering if it could be a program running in the background that's preventing me from doing these tasks. I have ZoneAlarm Pro on my computer but I don't know if it has anything to do with this. Thanks for any help.

TM, Try scandisk as well as defragment in SAFE mode.

Hi TM
"When I hit start, it says "Checking file allocation tables", then "checking folders"

This is actual process which the Scan Disk starts with.

You then said 'the whole process is repeating'. Did you checked the "Automatically Fix Errors". If you did then its going to take time. Uncheck the above Button.

About defrag "drive's content changed: restarting...". This is also a process of defragment of a drive. If you have worked with that drive then your data is scattered as and when you open and close your files. While defraging the system files it used to reallocate the data so that your programs run faster than ever. If it finds any change then it restarts itself.

The best way of running the scandisk and defragment is to to run the "Maintenance Wizard". While running this application make sure your virus scanners and other programs should not run or should not be schedulede to run.

Maintenance Wizard takes about 2-3 hours if you are running for the first time, so it is better to start the task when you are idle.

Try it, hope it could fix your problems.

One more thing i would loke to add is that if you are idle then after running the Maintenance wizard you should also run the Thorough scan of each drive as the standard scan does not disclose much errors as the thorough one, though it takes a long time but its better for your PC. Make sure the option 'Automatically Fix Errors should be Unchecked'.

Do this:
www.mesich.com
Click on trouble shooting, then scroll down to the end of the frame and click on "win98 defrag problems".
Follow instructions accordingly.

Any background program can cause this (such as screen savers). A recent addition is SpyBot Tea-Timer feature which must be turned off when doing scanreg or defrag. As stated there is always Safe Mode but with a little effort it is possible in the long term to run both of these from normal Windows - I do.
