Hi I've been running scandisk and defrag(the fast version)once a week for the past five. The thing is scandisk is still taking three hours to complete. Is this normal?the defrag seems ok taking 45 mins.
Also does anyone have advice on what is essential to have checked in the start menu for windows 98se?What is wcmdmgr and do i need it at startup?
Thanks

goosh, If you're running Scandisk in thorough mode 3 hours is not out of line. As far as wcmdmgr you don't need it in your Startup list as hown below.
wcmdmgr.exe wcmdmgr.exe It will periodically contact WildTangent servers to see if an update is available for your system and allows us to make the product exceptionally reliable. You can control its behavior, or disable it completely, inside your Windows Control Panel. Not required
Hope this helps.

unless you have a real big drive on an old 486/33, that's WAY too long for scandisk in regular mode. OR are you running a thorough surface scan each time? Unless there's some indication of disk errors to do with bad sectors, you don't need the surface scan at each run.
What are your basic specs?wcmdmgr looks to be an updater for something to do with wild tangent.
posible spyware? since it wants to phone home
You probably do not need it in startup.See:
http://www.google.com/search?q=wcmdmgr&btnG=Google+Search

I do a full scandisk every time.
I think it is spyware that is causeing me problems.Every time I do it my computer runs slow and then I see doubleclick but i have no way to know what program it is in.
damn!

Get lavasoft's AdAware
It's a very good spyware cleaner, likes to kill doubleclick and lots more.http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
