Usually scandisk & defrag hanging up are due to some background task which keeps starting. There are ways to deal with this but the quickest way for now is to run them in Safe Mode.

You tap F8 key whilst booting then select Safe Mode from the top of the list. If scandisk finds/fixes an error it "might" be the reason for the other problems.

I don't think you have enough free space to defrag properly. Try performing a disk cleanup. To do this: Start> programs> accessories> system tools> disk cleanup>
Right click My Computer> properties> Performance> virtual memory> let me specify> check – disable virtual memory. C:> OK> check all boxes> view files if desired> delete.
Now check the free space on the HD.

I reckon OtheHill might be onto it. 80M free seems very little - soon gets gobbled up when you have a few things going on.

Maybe you can uninstall some larger programs that you no longer use ,then burn some of your own stuff onto CD instead.

I normally hesitate a little about disabling Virtual Memory but with 176M of RAM it ought to be able to take it (at least long enough to prove the point about the HD).

I figured it may be OK for the defrag. Forgot to say that you should uncheck the disabling of virtual memory after this operation is over and let windows handle it.

Hi, O is probably correct. Rule of thumb is to save 20 to 25% free space on a system drive. Programs have to have space to work and Windoze has to have space for a swap file if and when it runs out of memory.

Good Luck, Jim
