Scandisk & Defrag keep restarting

Comment:
Using Win 95 OSR2 on a P3 450Mhz with 128Mb RAM and 12GbHD. When I try to run Scandisk or Defrag from Windows they keep "restarting due to disk write" even if I hold down shift while booting. Norton Speedisk eventually gets the job done but not without several restarts. Any suggestions as to what's occuring?

Try doing a Control/Alt/Del & End Task [one by one] on everything except Explore & Systray, then run Scan Disk, then Defrag Hope it helps, it worked for me

You have a program making disk writes in the background which makes scandisk/defrag restart. DW provides excellent advise for turning off the software that is causing your problem.

You have something running in the background, go to run and type msconfig then click on start up and uncheck what you believe is running in the back ground, be very careful not to uncheck anything that has to do with windows 98

Kevin, msconfig only works with win98, I'm running win95 OSR2. Natalia, point taken, but I'm told Windows and Norton complement each other when used in conjunction. Anyway, Norton restarts as well, but at least it eventually finishes the job. DW & Preston, tried the ctrl/Alt/Del option - didn't cure the problem. Weird, huh?
