Hi, I've had a problem for a while. Scan Disk won't run manually, and I've been notified to run in in an error message, because of improper shut-downs. It starts to run the check of allocation files, aborts, starts to run check of folders, aborts, and starts all over again, in a loop. I've received an error message that it has started 10 times, and that other programs running may interfere with it. Can you help me figure out the problem? Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Echoe

Try shutting down everything except explorer and system tray before running scandisk.Use Ctrl+Alt+Del and shut down each program one at a time.

Hi, thanks Darksea. I've tried that with no luck, same deal. My system is now locking up and shutting down automatically, (4x) during Internet browsing (fata error exceptions). Any other suggestions?

As your computer boots up, and BEFORE you get to the first "Loading Windows 98" screen, hold down the CTRL key.
This will bring you to the "Windows Startup Menu"
Choose the option to start the computer in Safe Mode.
Once it has booted into safe mode, you should then be able to run you scan disk without any problem.
If you do still get the message about scan disk having restarted more than 10 times, choose "No" when asked if you want to see this message again.Although it says it's re-started, it actually keeps it's place.
i.e. it continues counting the clusters from where ever it got to - it DOESN'T actually start again from the begining!
Crazy, but true.
Hope this helps
Regards
Simon

I used to have the same problem with Scan Disk. I go to the Start menu, click on Run, type in msconfig (this takes you to the System Configuration Utility), click on the Startup tab. The only boxes that should be checked are ScanRegistry and System tray.I do have AVG - Grisoft, so I leave those two boxes checked also. After restarting your computer, you should be able to run ScanDisk without it restarting 10 times or so.

Thanks, everyone. I was able to run Scandisk in Safe Mode, and after some considerable time, starts and restarts, I was able to DeFrag a terribly fragmented C:.
Thanks again to one and all and Happy Holidays!
Echoe
