when i do a scan disk it picks up errors on the drive .but when it comes to fix them .scan disk creates a "shell32.dll" error which sometimes will crash my computer and effect other programs from starting.
how do I fix scan disk? any help much appreciated
also how do you copy the cab files on to the computer

I don't know this problem, but got quite a lot of hits in Google using "shell32.dll error". Give it a whirl.
You asked about copying .cab files. If you have Winzip you can open the cab files and copy them individually. They take a bit of finding this way, although there are freebie programs out there that can help. Sometimes they have to be copied in from DOS (if Windows happens to be using the file you are replacing).
You can type sfc in the Run box and use the file extract facility. Unless you say otherwise this will normally get "originals" from the W98 CD.
If you are thinking of getting shell32.dll off the Windows CD then be careful because that file does get updated (not sure by what, but mine is much later than the original). You can save the one you already have if you are tempted to try the original file, just in case it makes things worse.
See this before using sfc:-

There is some good concise info on ways to copy install cd contents to hdd on Mesich's site, easy to find stuff there.

To copy the files I just right click on the Win98 cd in My Computer and choose open. I go to the Win98 folder (I think) and I just go to EDIT - SELECT ALL and then right click - and hold - anywhere on a highlighted file, and drag to the folder I want them in. Then choose COPY as it won't let you MOVE the folders.
About the SCANDISK problem, I would go to START - RUN and type: SFC SFC will check your computer for missing or corrupt files and will prompt you to replace them from the Windows 98 cd.

Under Windows highlight the folder, right click the mouse and use Copy (from) and then Paste to (destination). All the folder and its content will move to the hard drive from the cdrom. From a diskette dos prompt you can use xcopy and md to copy.
md c:\win98
This one creates the folder on the hard drive.
xcopy d:\path\win98\*.* c:\win98 /s
The s makes sure you get folder,sub-folders and files.
Good luck.
