I just installed a SB PCI512 on my machine. However, after booting up, there is absolutely no sound. I checked the device manager and it showed no conflicts. It is on IRQ 11 (as is my 3D Blaster Banshee). I tried to move the sound card to another IRQ but it won't let me. Can anyone help me out or give some ideas on this? Thanks.

Sounds like you need to first UNINSTALL your old drivers and so forth.
First, have the computer up and running.
Goto Accessories on your Program Menu and Goto System Tools----->System Information, Click on IRQ's and let Windows detect the current IRQ settings. Use Alt-PrtScn and paste a picture copy of this info into Word or Wordpad and print it out so you have a hard copy of the current IRQ settings. Make note of any free IRQ's.
The next step is to Delete all traces of the old sound card drivers:
To do this, goto Control Panel---->
System---->Device Manager.
Go down thru the Device Manager list and locate the branch called Sound. Click on it and the sub-branch showing your OLD card/driver will be there. Highlight the OLD sound card and click on the Delete Button.
This deletes the old driver off the system.Print another copy of the IRQ settings after deleting the old sound card drivers. You will see that at least one IRQ has been freed up.
Shut the computer down, unplug your computer from all power sources, ground yourself by touching an unpainted surface area of the computer box chassis and REMOVE the sound card from your computer.
Boot the system back up, thus forcing the computer to recognize that you no longer have a physical device called Sound Card in the system. Once again, double check your IRQ settings and take note of any changes.
Now, you have completely uninstalled the old drivers and forced the computer to recognize you have no sound card installed. This cleans everything up so you are good to go with a re-installation of New Sound Card.
Shut the system down, unplug and ground, and re-install your new sound card in the appropriate slot. ISA is a black slot, PCI is white/cream on the motherboard.
Make sure you plug everything back in, and your speakers are properly plugged into the new card (refer to your owners guide if you aren't sure...yeah, even the best of us make the mistake of putting the wrong plug into the wrong recepticle).
Boot her up and let Windows detect the new sound card. Be prepared to have your Windows 98 System Disk and the Sound Card Installation Disk on hand if asked for.
Upon booting up Win 98, you should see a little drum beating and a window saying, System Is Updating...or you should get up a System Detects New Hardware Window. At this point, it may ask you for either the Win 98 System Disk (its looking for drivers) or it will ask for your new driver disk. Insert the appropriate Disk into your CD or A drive and click on the appropriate INF file and let Windows install the sound card.
If this operation fails, go back to control panel and use Add New Hardware to detect and install the card. Have your installation disk handy!
Now, after system detects and installs the sound card, go back into Device Manager and make sure the new card is installed. Goto system resources and determine which IRQ it is using.
Also, use the System Information tool and get a total picture of how all the IRQ's are being used.
Windows does funny things, and re-arranges or does a shuffle when new hardware is added.
So as you go thru these steps, don't be surprised if Windows does a reshuffle.Your new sound card should be installed and functional.
Shut the computer down one more time and boot her up and VOILA! You should have sound.
That's my advice...I've installed bunches of sound cards using this method and its the best method I know.... Good Luck!
