Save AOL eMail

Is there any way to save AOL email locally 1) as you and 2) so that it is readable outside of AOL? I want to be able to reformat and reinstall the OS without having to save and reinstall the unreadable file that contains all locally saved email. The problem is that doing it that way requires replacement of the existing file, which may also contain saved email. FYI, this is not for me. So I do not have an AOL-infected machine in front of me.

Thanks for the response, bobbyslob, but that is exactly what I am trying to avoid doing. If possible, I want to be able to save email as I go and to save it in such a way that I don't have to copy/cut the unreadable file to disk/storage partition and then put it back after I reformat/reinstall the OS. This is something that is a breeze with Outlook Express, but apparently not AOL.
