remove as much stuff as you can put what ever you can on to discs and delete anything you dont need. also defrag every week and if you can add a bigger drive as a slave and move all your "stuff" to the slave drive. When you reach a certain level of no space the system will become unstable

Remove installed programs via CONTROL PANEL--ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS; don't just delete them to the recycle bin.

The default setting for IE is 20 days...that means every single site you visited over the past 3 weeks is stored on your HDD. Change the setting to zero & change the amount of disk space used for temporary internet files to 50MB. Then download a program called CCleaner-Slim & use it regularly.

I have a friend in Moscow Russia. And about every 2-3 years he sends me an Autocad drawing via attachment. Last one had some sort of bug in it.

It would take everything found on hard drive and make up a duplicate copy, and thus used up near all of the remaining area on the drive. If I did a DEFRAG, I could watch it filling up all but maybe one K of space. If I did a SCANDISK (and NO defrag) it would then clear up the space. If I accessed a file and made changes, it would erase the duplicate, and I would then get that little bit of space back, until a Defrag came along, then it got filled up again.

So, stopped using DEFRAG a few months ago.
