I run Windows 98SE,AMD K6,450MHz,96.MB RAM
My computer seemed fine until a couple days ago. It's begun to run really, really slow. Until it eventually freezes up. At startup I have 82% resources, before you know it I'm down to about42%. Does anyone know what could be the problem?
THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Is your startup list pretty big? You could go to msconfig and uncheck the items you don't really need at startup. Is your systray loaded full of stuff, that eats resources. Are you cleaning out the temp internet folder, history, cookies upon exit. Have you deleted the C:\temp file info from time to time. Are you doing the normal PC maintenance such as Scan Disk once a week and Defrag every few weeks. Below is a good site on resource management.

Have you given a little thought to increasing your RAM a little? That may help some.

Open Windows Explorer/Temp/highlight everything/deleat.
Same goes for Windows Temp...Win Explorer/Windows/Temp/highlight everything/deleat.
Hope this helps.

there are a number of ways to get rid of temp files......temporary internet files can be selected right from the directory folder and deleted....these seem to be the big hogs....you can also clear out a lot using the preferences in your browser. "Temp" temp files, on the other hand, can be deleted using the first method and you would be looking for files that begin with ~ and usually end in .tmp

If you are unsure about the .tmp files, I'd leave them....you usually don't have that many to worry about....unlike temp internet files which build up constantly.

A good investment would be to get a utility like Norton System Works. These utility programs have the ability to empty all of the safe to dispose of trash with the click of a few buttons. They also give you the option of deleting programs and subprograms you might not need or want, without the hassle of deleting the wrong thing! You can also change your mind later (usually) and recover something if needed.

My other system is like yours except its a 475 with 256mb of memory....this one is 950/256 and I still have to "take out the trash" on a very regular basis....I surf a minimum of 30 hrs a week and I've just gotten used to doing my maintenance.

Good luck

Mike
