Hey......
This is probably a stupid question but the forums here have helped me so very much in the past. Whenever I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete, I notice a program running called "Rundll". What is this? Can anyone answer this question?

Thanx,
Nocturnal

Nocturnal,

No question is stupid, only answers can be stupid.

Maybe this answers your question:
INFO: Windows Rundll and Rundll32 Interface

Besides the above link I found this on Rundll:
Microsoft’s "Run a DLL as an App". A DLL is a Dynamic Link Library. In layman and [very] simplistic terms a DLL is a portion of a software program which is only used by the main program as and when specific features of the software are used by the end user (for instance the PRINT function in your wordprocessor). The main advantage is that, using this technique, programmers can develop software which does not end up gobbling up memory through the whole program loading in one go, but which instead only uses enough memory for the core functions of the program, with specific features, implemented in separate DLL files, only loaded as and when the end-user decides to use them (ie. the Print DLL will only be loaded into memory when the end-user clicks on PRINT). Another advantage is that the software developers can also have common features which they have implemented across a range of their programs, implemented just the one time as a shared DLL which is used by all that developer’s programs. RUNDLL and RUNDLL32 are the Microsoft Windows programs that need to be used to load DLLs into memory so that they can be used by specific programs or by Windows.

Recommendation :
RUNDLL and RUNDLL32 do not normally appear in the Task List in Windows. In our experience they tend to appear only when you are already having problems of some sort with your PC. This is not to say, however, that if you see RUNDLL or RUNDLL32 in your Task List, you should be worried. If you see either in your Task List, simply leave it alone. We are not sure as to why RUNDLL or RUNDLL32 can sometimes suddenly appear in the Task List, but we believe you should leave them alone.

Hope it's of any use.

This is for 'The Count' if they are still on-line - I have a problem with the Rundll32 file - I cannot access files in 'My Computer' due to an error with one of the "Rundll32" files - can you help?

RogerJ,

If I can help, I will. If I cannot help, I'm sure someone else can.
But you'll need to be a bit more specific.

A first option anyway, that wouldn't hurt, is to run a up to date virusscan and on top of that Spybot - Search and Destroy.
After downloading, click the online button and download updates. Then run.

To The Count - thanks for this - I'll have a look. I've posted my own problem yesterday under the title Rundll32.exe"shell32control_rundll - the problem follows a virus successfully entering my PC - worm yaha - I've removed the infected files but think I've deleted something I shouldn't. I can't re run the Win 95 CD because the version on my PC is newer than the disc I have.

Nocturnal this site is also very handy for such info...as it lists things running under ctrl/alt/del & also in the startup list under msconfig. It tells you what they do & if they are required..

I accidentally deleted rundll32.exe from my computer. Can somebody tell me how I can restore it? Is it possible for someone to email the file to me?

I would greatly appreciate any help.

Just a copy and paste here...
Where it reads msinfo32.exe replace that with rundll32.exe.

"you have to re-install "msinfo32.exe" you can do that with system file checker and your windows cd. go to start--run--type in sfc--hit enter. in the box check the tab "extract one file"--type in the box "msinfo32.exe" (without the qquotes) hit enter or start. voila--system information program restored"

Hope it helps, never done this myself. :-)
