I have a DGI Laptop. When booted up it ask me to press F1 to run setup. After pressing F1 it ask me to enter a ROM PASSWORD. Is this something special only on DGI computers.

If you bought the laptop used or it was a store's demo model they probably put a password on the cmos setup. If you have the books for the laptop check them to see how to erase the cmos setup password. If you don't look for a website for this company or the motherboard. Usually removing the cmos battery will disable the cmos password (sometimes you must leave it out for 20 min to 2 hours) in other models a jumper setting must be changed. The larger problem is WHY it is asking you to enter the setup mode. You normally don't have to change the cmos setup unless you have changed hardware (disk drive, memory or possibly you have a new pcmcia card. If the laptop is older you may have a problem with the year 2000. Sometimes reflashing the bios with a later version obtained from the manufacturer either from a website or on a diskette.

Good luck, Rick

I have the manuals that came with the computer. This is what was written on the subject:
"Setting Password: A password up to six (6) characters and/or numbers can be entered. However, do not use symbols, slashes, blank spaces, punctuation marks, etc. The system will ask you to enter the same password again for confirmation.

Once the password has been set and saved (use F10 at the main Setup screen), the system allows you three (3) chances to enter the password when entering either the system level or the Setup program. However if after three tries the correct password has not been entered, the system will ask you to enter the ROM password: AMI_SW (the system's default password for user's who forget their own.) If the incorrect ROM password is entered, then the system will not allow you to enter either the system level or the setup program.

Changing a password: To change a password, enter the Change Password submenu and enter new password. Confirm the new password as requested. ( the old password does not have to be disabled first. The system will override the old password with the new password.

Disabling Password: To disable a password, enter the Change Password submenu and press "Enter" at the Enter New password screen. A message will be displayed to indicate that the password has been disabled."

Good Luck
