My computer unexpectedly opened in MS-DOS mode, and it necessitated a call to tech support. The remedy was to locate "C:\Windows_" and enter "cd\" and on the next line "win", (or something like that). This returned me to Windows mode. What is this command, and is it the accepted way to remedy the problem when the computer does this? I am running Windows 98, IBM PC with 64RAM, 6.0hd, 300mhz.

"win" starts the windows Graphical User Interface (GUI)

It is an acceptable way to start windows as long as from now on your machine goes into windows automatically at startup. If not, post another message here and you'll get plently of advice how to fix things.

so "win" starts the GUI. What if the computer opens again in MS-DOS mode too frequently? I think this one was precipitated when I installed an optical mouse--probably too much for the system--and the computer said it couldn't find the pointing device, plus some other stuff about MS-DOS mode.

Only boots to Dos
Type c:\windows\win
If that starts windows OK then you have a couple of options:

Option 1 the correct way
Edit msdos.sys and change Bootgui=0 to Bootgui=1
You can use Notepad to edit the file
Before you do that right click on msdos.sys and select 'Properties'
Turn off the 'read only' bit
Now you can edit msdos.sys and save it
Now right click on msdos.sys and turn the 'read only' bit back on
The system 'should' boot up to Windows now.

Option 2 the easy way
Edit autoexec.bat
Add c:\windows\win at the end of the file (or just 'win')
