I have a AST Pentium system that a friend of mine upgraded to Windows 98 and put in a used CD ROM. Now that we have a new computer we would like to restore the old one back to Windows 95 so we can play our old games. Here is the problem ... when I attempt to restore with the factory disk and CD this message comes up:
Drive Number=1 No CD ROM found
Drive Number=2 Model Number= HITACHI CDR-7930
Model not found in file
The CD ROM drive is not responding or can not be identified!
Do I have to have the old CD Drive? Because it's gone. Can I get a replacement or what?
Can anyone help with this problem?

The original CD drive type and model have to be the same because the Restore CD was written for that hardware. If you feel adventerous you can copy the contents of that CD and track down the references to that drive and correct them and then burn a new Restore CD.

Thanks for the tip; wcr3d. I get the general idea ... could you tell me exactly what I am looking for and what do I replace it with? I found a text file on the floppy. In a folder called "Bin" and then a subfolder called "cddata" and this is what it says: CS-R36 1
TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-5302TA
TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-5502TA
TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-5602B
CD-ROM CDR-S1
CD-ROM CDR-S1G
CD-ROM CDR_S1G
CD-ROM CDR_S16
CD-ROM CDR_S18
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rick
