so I have read the messages from May 2004 re restoration of rundll32.exe ........
I too have error message: [Cannot locate the file 'c:\rundll32.exe'(or one of its components). Make sure the path and file name are correct and all of the required libraries are available.]
Running win98 se oem ver on compaq presario desktop (yep propiretary!).
I lost this file and I am sure a whole lot of other dll's due to the NASTY WORM: w32.beagle.m@mm
In running remote viral scan from Panda Antivirus, lost dial up connection, lost modem drivers, and lost rundll32.exe
Spent DAYS and sleepless nights trying to install new HD and load original OS that came w/ compaq to no avail.
per it was not my pc - cannot wipe old HD and re-format/install on that one.
FINALLY....got alternate system to scan old HD and discovered the 586 infected virus files. Had to manually quarentine and delete 103. Nav took care of the rest. Downloaded the removal tool from Symantec, loaded onto the c: and ran it from the Presario.
LOW AND BEHOLD the OS booted. However still having the DLL trouble!
I tried:
"Start>>Run>>type; msconfig Press Enter"
I got the same exact wording as in the rundll32.exe error message only instead of Cannot locate file 'rundll32.exe'... it states: Cannot locate file 'msconfig'....I tried --
"Search for files on C: *.cpl"
- found a bunch of .cpl files in c:\windows
"Search for files on C: control.exe"
- found 1 in C:\Windows
"Search for files on C: control.ini"
- found 2 C:\system.sav\windows
C:\windows"Search for files on C:\ win_17.cab"
- DID NOT FIND ANY
SO the links in the message tracks above to download rundll32.exe are not working.NOW WHAT? any suggestions?
Heather

Did you try running sfc?
(System File Checker)
This will replace missing or corrupt system
files from the CD - so you'll need to have that
handy.
Just Start\Run\sfc

YEP. Tried "Start\Run\sfc"
NO LUCK. ERROR message:
[Cannot locate file "sfc" (or one of its components). Make sure the path and file name are correct and all of the required libraries are available.]
Any other suggestions?

It sounds like you are going to run into one missing file after another. I suggest you find out how to reinstall windows without a format on a Compaq. Maybe the web site can help.
Just to be sure that the file is really missing, try;
start/Run/c:\windows\system\sfc

Yeah, it sounds like the best thing is to reinstall windows over itself. A typical method of doing that is here:
http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/161174.html
A reinstall will overwrite your existing directx. So if you've upgraded from windows' original version you'll need to reinstall the directx upgrade.

Thanks but no can do. I am DESPRETLY trying to avoid that - - last option per Compaq wants says to bad so sorry for you, full restore with OUR quick restore disk or send the computer in at $100/hr. BUT LUCKILY I HAVE MADE HUGE PROGRESS!
anyhow for anyone who needs the info...RESOLUTION TO REINSTALL RUNDLL32.EXE:
While the computer still running windows (no shutdown), Put in a Retail version of Win98 SE into CDROM (drive E).
Start>Programs>MS Dos PromptC:\windows>E: [Enter]
(my CDROM drive = E:)E:\>dir /p [ENTER]
E:\>cd win98 [Enter]
E:\win98>dir /p [Enter]then located and found win98_40.cab file and wrote it down.
at typed exactly the following:
E:\win98>extract /a win98_40.cab rundll32.exe /l c:\windowsthis extracted the RUNDLL32.exe file from the cab files, and put in it windows! HOOOORAH!
if anyone is following this you may want to type extract first to find out what the switch ([/A] [/L] [/C] etc to make sure that you get the right switch for what you want to to extract and where to put it.
That really resolved a bunch.
I have 8 other missing files and 3 are not OS related, so hopefully I can download from www.dllfiles.com ?

Hi Bullfrog. Some time ago, I made up a complete installation package for "SFC".
Installs like any other program.
If you want me to send it to you (342kb's),
just email me. p.s. It's zipped.Just trying

I am trying to fix my Dad's pc and it has the same error coming up. He no longer has his windows 98 disc and is unable to connect to the internet since his pc has had this virus. I am having trouble installing antivirus software as am unable to uninstall some old antivirus software due to the rundll32 error. Please could you email your installation package to me to see if this works?
Thanks,
Tanya
