Can anyone explain to me to how to restore the registry in Windows 98, from the registry backups (I think I know but just want confirmation) and what kind of problems might I run into if I do this?
Thanks.

Windows 98 keeps 5 copies of the registry, it updates them once a day (no matter how many times you boot each day). It stores them in the Windows\Sysbackup folder as Rb000.cab, Rb001.cab ...
If you need to restore one: Boot to a DOS prompt (tap F8 when you see "Starting Windows 98" or hold the Ctrl key down while the system is Booting), when you see the "C:\" prompt type: scanreg /restore (press enter) you will be presented with the last five days of Registry backups, pick the newest one that will work (the one from today is the one that may be corrupted) "press enter".
If you are lucky enough to have a copy of the Beta 3 version of 98 use the ERU or Emergency Recovery Utility that was included with it.

Scanreg.exe will back up 99 files if specified in the scanreg.ini... BUT scanreg has a major flaw like most of ms's products.
It was built to make up to 99 backups but it can only restore 5. if anyone knows how to write a program that will fix this i am willing to try it. i am not looking for a work around. if you have any suggestions please email me at neo_honkey - at - excite.com

In response to the question about using the 99 backups windows makes, thanks for the infor on that, but can you tell me what to set in scanreg.ini to cause it to make 99 backups?
Following your question, i looked at my 5 backups in windows/sysbackup (a hidden directory) and doubleclicked it. I use turbozip which has cab files assiciated with it (winzip does also work with cab files too). Turbozip opens the cab file, and inside it is user.dat, system.dat, win.ini and system.ini. You'd need to do the replacements from DOS, and you have to manually change the attributes to read only and hidden (and the attribs on the originals to delete them). This is from memory and should point you in the right direction, but i would seek confirmation before attempting it. There are also utilities that will aid in automating this. Using this manual procedure you should be ableto restore any of those 99 reg backups.

NEW IN WINDOWS ME! they have a scanreg that you can run from start - run. it will show all 99 backups and it does it all right there in windows.
