I made a backup disc of photos on my old computer which is running on Win98. I used the "send to" command and didn't realize it would convert my JPG's into a QIC. I didn't even know that format was. I'm running XP professional on a Dell now and I know it won't read the disc. However, I still have the old computer and I want to restore the backup disc. My technical knowledge is limited in this area and I can't quite figure out what to do. Can someone give me step by step instructions as to how I go about restoring my backup so the photos are saved as JPG's and I can open them? All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi CarolAnn,
Your JPG's aren't converted in to a QIC file.
Your JPG's are more like with winzip zipped in to the QIC file.
The .QIC extension is associated with Microsoft Win9x Backup. And as you already discovered, the WinXP backup/restore program does NOT support the Win9x Backup .QIC file format. So what you'll need to do is pop in the disc in the old computer running Win98, launch MsBackup.exe from Start, Run, type in MsBackup.exe and click OK.
In the Microsoft Backup window, select the Restore tab, select your backup device (CD-ROM drive/writer?), put a checkmark in front off the .QIC file you wish to restore. Review the other settings like, overwrite existing files, original location etc.
I haven't got MsBackup installed on my system, therefor I'm not able to give you more details... sorry. It's what I can remember of the screens.Restore the critical files from the .QIC backup to the old computer and then write them out to floppy disks or a CD-ROM, using your regular CD burning software, for transfer to the WinXP computer.
Hope this helps.

Thanks a bunch. One question though. When I restore the QIC file to the old computer where do I restore it to? To the desktop? There is no C:/ Drive option. Also you said to review the other options such as "overwrite existing files." Should I choose that option?

Hi CarolAnn,
First of all sorry for my delayed response.
I wasn't able to get behind my computer, yesterday due to a lasting pain in my back. Have been almost 21 hours in bed struggling on how to lie, and I was barely able to sit or walk. I'm having a better day today, so here I'm again. :)I find it a bit odd that there is no C: drive to restore to.
Maybe you first need to expand My Computer by clicking on the + sign in front of it.
If you can find the option to restore to a alternate* location, select that and you than should get the option to choose a location, including your C: drive, as to where the files should be restored too.
But if your positive that there is no C: drive option, yes you could restore the files to your desktop and from there place them in the desired folder on your C: drive. If there is a checkmark in front of Overwrite existing files, I would strongly suggest to uncheck it.
* Could be some other wording used.

Hi CarolAnn and The Count,
Here is how I restore the backup.
Start Microsoft Backup from System Tools.
Place a tick next to Restore Backed up files and click OK.
Under Restore from in the first drop down menu select File.
In the second box you can type in the path to the .qic or select the folder just to the right of it and browse to the file. Click on Next.
The next screen will say click the box next to what you want to restore. Place a check next to each of these and click on OK.
On the next screen under What to Restore click on the + sign next to C:, this will expand it and you can select the items you saved by placing a check next to the boxes.
Click on Next. The next screen will ask where to restore.
I choose to store in the original location, this way the pictures go back to the same folder I am used to having them in.You can also select Alternate Location and another box will come up where you can browse to the location by clicking on the yellow folder to the right of it.
Click on Next.On the next screen I place a tick next to Do not replace the file on my computer and click on Start.
You should receive a message "operation complete".
Hope you get feeling better Count.
Best Regards,
Mesich
