video resolution occasionally resets to 800x600 from my saved 1024x768

I use a KVM switch so think this may be related as indicated by this post:

I couldn't reply on that thread as it was from 2005. But there was no answer to it.

I believe that when the computer is not the active system on my KVM is when a reboot/restart causes the resolution shift. When it doesn't 'see' the monitor or get the expected handshake etc, I think it assumes a compatibility issue and therefore reverts to the 800x600 "safe video mode" - as asked in that other thread, does any one know how to force the 1024x768 mode on normal restarts?
