Compaq Armada M700 Notebook
This is an old Win98 Notebook PC.

I am prompted with "power on password" at power up. I do not have the password. Is it possible to reset or remove this password?

I researched this a bit. One site is selling a kit to reset the password. Another site suggests i try removing the battery from the board.

Since i am not the brightest bulb in the lamp i decided to see if its something simple :).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Here's the download page for various manuals for that model. There may be a 'clear cmos' or 'clear password' jumper that will fix it. One of the manuals may have that info.

Hi SMUOD, DAVEINCAPS, hello everyone,

SMUOD,

It has been quite some time since we last spoke. I hope everything is well with you and yours.

Here is a few different methods to try.

Start the computer using a Win98 bootdisk.

At A:\> type Debug [Enter]

Type -O 70 FF [Enter]

Type -O 71 17 [Enter]

Type Q [Enter]

Note: The o's are the letter and not the number.

Restart the computer and try to access the BIOS.

If no go that way try this free program to reset the password.

Another freebie that might work is KILL CMOS

HTH

Best Regards,
Mesich

Remove ALL power to the laptop including the CMOS (backup) battery. No, I don't know how to do that. This should clear the BIOS settings.

If it is a hard drive password, you are out of luck, unless you want to spend $500-$1000.

Thanks for your help.. I tried to make a boot disk last week with 1 of the floppies i have here and after the 5th one reporting errors i figured they were no good. Tonight i finally found an extra minute.. went out and picked up a pack of floppies... guess what?

No floppy drive on this thing :).

Thanks for the link Dave.. i didnt realize that HP's site is so organized. Great resource/Info.

Im doing great Mesich.. Best year of my life.. I got to spend 5 months in Europe following a yacht PIC around from port to port. I came back July 3rd and moved into a new house, Got married July 4th and spent a week in Spain HoneyMooning and finishing up the work on the yacht. Once in a life time experience. I hope you and everyone here is doing well.

"BTW-What does this have to do with Windows 95/98??" The OS is windows 98.. does that qualify me for access/use of the 9x board? :)

Im going to do something i never thought i would do.. Stand in line at the Geek Squad counter at bestbuy and see if they can help me. I remember the good old days when i had unlimited time to browse the boards here at computing.net. My sisters trying to get this old notebook going for her nephew to do his homework on.
