PC boots to dos screen, after a possible virus.. What is the best method of repair?
Do I fix the MBR with the emergency disklette?

First off I haven't yet seen this machine, the only details are as above, looking at it 2morrow.
What Command Promp will I need to run win98? Also can I fix the os loading files?

A possible problem is a corrupted msdos.sys file. Try typing:

path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command

win

Yep its sounds like the 98 boot process is ending with a dos prompt. There is plenty on this forum about that, and its very likely its a damaged or non windows version of msdos.sys as ham30 suggests.

Generally refreshing io.sys and msdos.sys files and then copying a good copy of window's msdos.sys (which I call the msdos.sys fix) will solve most problems.

Sure - that may well be the case, and a truncated MSDOS.SYS be my 'best guess' also.

There are other possibilities - we could guess all day


Why don't they make computers that will do what we think we want them to do?
