Comment:

I downloaded Spyware Stormer earlier this evening and scanned my computer, finding over 700 infected files. I wanted to remove them but I would have needed to buy the actual program to do so.

Does anyone know of a free spyware/adware removal program? I think all the affected files are slowing down my computer's performance.

"home page appears to offer a free scanner but then demands purchase instead (1, 2); dubious corp. associations (1); variant of SpyVest & Spyware Stormer (1); Ad-aware knockoff

Two of the best are absolutely free:

Ad-aware and Spybot - just click on the link by my name for download sites

Try the 14 day FREE trial of EWIDO.
http://www.ewido.net/en/

Download the program and run the scan.
You DO NOT have to buy the plus suite,
even though they will ask you to. You can keep using it and do manual downloads of the updates which occur frequently. This is a european scanner and has about 58,000 definitions in its database...far better than spybot or ad-aware. It will remove
spyware, trojans, worms, malware, etc.

Never pay for software, there`s almost always a freeware prog that will accomplish the same thing as a program you buy.
Beware, you can drop alot of money in the pc industry, and really all you have is a short term false since of security, since everything advances so fast.
And yes, adaware and spybot are probably the best.

I have been running SpywareGuard for some months now and find that spybot and adaware find little if anything worth reporting.

SpywareGuard stops them getting in rather than finding the ones that got thru.

Also running AVG and ZoneAlarm.

SpywareBlaster (free) also stops them getting through.

SpyBot has an "immunise" feature but acknowledges that if you have SpywareBlaster it is more effective in this respect.

I should`nt have been so judgemental, on my post.
I should have included in that little diatribe, if you find a program that does solve your problem, is a well written program and within a reasonable price, definitley support the author,to insure we keep receiving quality products. A lot of the best written programs are "donationware."
It`s just that there is so much flawed software, that are written poorly and interferes with the operating system that it is written for, it`s easy to throw megabucks at a problem without actually solving it.

I hope I have redeemed my self in the light of any programmers that read these posts.
