hello friends
i often get 'ccapp not responding' in task manager. My computer is slow at startup and norton av is slowly responding too. I want to get rid of it all and install another antivirus. The add/remove program is not working on that. Can someone tell how to as i can't find this information for such versions? Im not a pro regarding regedit or deleting shared files... I heard while seeking info that norton 2005 version is full of crap..... customers on that are divided 50-50.. thanks a million, virginie

If the uninstaller from NAV and Windows don't want to work then I think you may be better of in the long run just reformatting and starting fresh. If you still want to try to manually remove the program, first delete any other portions of the suite if NAV was part of NSWs. After removing all the folders from program files using windows explorer, use jvpowertools to further clean the registry. First run the auto registry cleaner then reboot and manually remove any entries showing that you KNOW to be part of Norton. Then run the auto again rebooting in between. If you are lucky, you won't remove anything critical. I suggest backing up critical files before attempting this as you may get locked out of Windows. jvpowertools is now commercial software but the last free build is available in a link in a post here at Computing.net.

may need to reinstall norton antivirus, to uninstall, if running other symantec software, antispam, security, may be sharing files, and can not complete unistall , try disabling in startup, rebooting and then uninstall, if using regedit , delete files and folders linked to norton/symantec antivirus only...:), suggest leaving installed, and minimized options, when not required.

Sometimes the obvious isn't always obvious to others. I didn't think to instruct you to shut down the program before removal because I just assumed. All is well that ends well.

alors bon, cest registry mechanics who repaired 397 errors of my 400...
i manually removed the rest by following directions of symantec 'Manually uninstalling Norton AntiVirus 2002 from Windows 98/Me' , or what i could find of its items :
1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
3. Delete the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Symantec.Norton.Antivirus.IEContextMenu
4. Delete the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\NAVAP
5. If you do not have any other Symantec products installed, then delete the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\SYMEVNT
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\SYMTDI
6. Delete the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{3075C5C3-0807-4924-AF8F-FF27052C12AE}
7. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
8. In the right pane, delete the following value:

NAV Agent C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVAPW32.exe
9. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
10. In the right pane delete the following value:

ScriptBlocking ""C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Script Blocking\SBServ.exe" -reg
11. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\InstalledApps
12. In the right pane, delete the following values:

NAV "C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus"
NAV95 "C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus"
13. Delete the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\ScriptBlocking
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus
14. Exit the Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

everything (seems) to work properly now.

thanks for the support in perseverence.

u might want to try using RNAV.exe tool from symantec website.

Just run the exe file and you are done.
it will remove the (symevnt.386, symtdi.vxd, savrtpel.vxd and savrt.vxd).

then go to control panel where u might see live update, use add/remove to remove the entry.
