removing items from taskbar?

Comment:
1. What is the area called on the right end of the taskbar, where icons for background tasks are displayed?
2. How do I permanently remove programs from starting in the background when they aren't in the Startup folder? For example, setiathome starts when I reboot and I can't find where to disable it permanently.

It's called the system tray, and you can remove items (or, specifically, keep those programs from running) by going to START -> RUN -> MSCONFIG (assuming you are on win98) and going to the startup tab.
Uncheck the programs you don't want running (you can generally tell what program is what by looking at it's path, ect)
You'll need to reboot, and when you do, the programs you unchecked will no longert be showing up in the tray!

Find out what you need to run first, so you don't mess anything up
Summary: In the 'start' => 'find' menu, how do you remove items from here? Does anyone know where this value is in the registry? Oh yeah, I'm running Win98se. ...
