typically, the programs that install themselves in the system tray have an option for startup. right click on the icon in quiestion, look for a properties option. If not, and you are using Windows 98, you can run msconfig in the Start->Run box and select the startup tab. From here you can uncheck any items you do not want.

Some software is configured to launch on start-up in your system tray.
Often you can rid yourself of these icons by right clicking and choosing Delete or Remove Icon from the menu that pops up.
If that does'nt work, check your start up group.
Click START/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/SYSTEM INFORMATION. Click SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY/STARTUP, uncheck the box next to the tool you suspect is causing the problem, and restart Windows.

A quick way too is--
Press the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys at the same
time.

A box will come up showing you "most"
of what is running in the "background".

Highlight one-at-a-time (except Explorer
and Systray) and click "end task".

See how your System runs during a session.

All these items will come-back at next
reboot. This step simply allows you
to "see" how your system runs without
ceratain other programs also running.

You can permanently keep selected programs
from starting at boot-up by going to
Start/Programs/StartUp and selecting
which to keep, which to stop....
