Subject: removing & re-installing Windows 98
Comment:

Full version of Windows 98 Second Edition.

I get intermittent, but consistent system
lockups that generally do not respond to anything other than a cold boot.

I would like to totally remove Windows 98 and then do a clean reinstall.

I can run fdisk and re-partition and format my hard disk, but that should be a last resort.

Does anyone have a better solution?

Have you checked to see if you are loading too many things into Start Up? You may have too much stuff running simultaneously. Go into your StartUp directory and remove all the stuff you don't want running.

Increase the amount of available memory you have on your computer.

Increase the amount of virtual memory you have assigned

Defrag your hard disk

Use a good utility like Norton utilities. When you upgrade to a new O/S, or delete programs and add others, quite often, it leaves a bunch of garbage, broken links, and other things in your registry...this can cause hidden conflicts and lockups, unexpected operating errors and other tripups. Windows 98 and Win 98SE are really stable operating versions (at least compared to Win 95!). Usually, when the system gets burdened down with a lot of unnecessary stuff running at once plus running out of RAM memory or encountering misconfigured virtual memory, you can get freezeups and hangups. Try these steps first before you go and ditch the system.

Windows 98 is a full version not an upgrade
Hard disk was partitioned with FDISK and formatted and has been running for about 3 months without problems.

Is simply used for billing procedures with RBase 5.5 which I have used for years

My system is an AMD K6400
Hard Disk is 6 gig
Video card is ATI with 8 meg
64 meg of ram
Onstream tape backup system
Epson 900 USB printer
Logitech PS2 mouse
No modem
No additional system utilities

There is nothing on my system that should create a problem.

BUT IT DID!

The hard question is there any way to remove Win98 without reformatting the hard disk?

You can get a startup disk with cd-rom support at http://www.bootdisk.com and download it to floppy. Restart with the floppy, make sure you have access to the cd-rom, it bumps the cd-rom drive letter up one I think. Then just go to the c:\ prompt and start deleting. you can remove directories with rmdir command, but the directory must be empty. Then after you get all deleted, just initialize the install from cd. Good luck.
