I was having some problems with my system and decided to download W98SE over the present system without a format, which I have done in the past with good results. Everything went smooth but I lost my Ethernet card listing in the drop down window on the IP Config window and couldn't for the life of me remember how to get it back.
The card was showing in the Device Manger\Network Adapters section so I know that part was okay.
I finally did a restore from yesterday morning's startup and the card appeared back in the IP config window.
My questions are how would you normally get it back and did my doing a restore defeat the reload of W98SE?

I find it's best to physically remove the card and then reinsert it...allowing P&P to do it's job.
Windows 98 doesn't have the system restore feature, so I'm not sure what you mean by you did a restore.
Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!!

Perhaps you meant "registry" restore (scanreg /restore). In which case it does just that. Provided the original problem was not with the registry and everything now works then there's nothing to worry about. Any corrupted or wrong version files that Windows replaced would stay in place.
If it was some sort of restore disk provided by your computer manufacturer, then it is difficult to say because no two restore disks do exactly the same thing.
A couple of asides:
When you overlay Windows it is best to do it from DOS (using a boot floppy as part of the process). Maybe that's what you did, but when done from Windows itself it can get a tad messy because the install sees some files as "in use".
Sometimes removing "problem items" from Device Manager and rebooting enables Windows to sort things out.

Your are right I did a registry restore.
I also unplugged the ethernet card and tried that way. Also removed it in divice manger and let it reinstall and that didn't work either.
I guess what you said about the bad or corrupted files not coming back answered my question about the reloading and then doing the registry restore.
It still bugs me that I couldn't get the IP configured right without doing the restore.
I just reloaded 98 from the Recovery CD.
Thanks for the info.

Hi Deke, Derek, JenniferSumn & every one.
Merry christmas to you & a very Happy New Year.Once where I am working the same type of problem occured but with a modem instead of a Lan card, hope this experience might work for you.
Once I was working & the system hanged & I gave a forced restart. The result was that the modem was unable to be detected properly & was not working (not responding) but it was installed.
I unistalled the modem restarted & tried reinstallation but no luck. So to get it working I detached the modem restarted the system till I heard the post beep & shut down again & replaced the modem & again restarted & enabling the bios to automatically detect it.
Now when I try to reinstall it did without any issues & is working fine.
But I must tell you that the above problem was not generated by reinstalling windows.
Hope the suggestion might help you as it helped me.
Best of luck
