Is it possible to re-install windows without losing everything on your computer? My computer keeps crashing, telling me that windows was installed incorrectly. In the past, on other computers, this has meant an inevitable total crash. The message says go to setup and redo the windows install???? I have no clue as how to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
If you insert your Win98 Cd and choose "install, or setup" I forget which :) You can install Windows over itself, which will repair any corrupted Windows files without hurting your programs. I've done it several times with no problems.
Of course, you should backup anything important first just in case. Murphy's Law still rules the universe!
Willie: You will get plenty of advice about what to do. But if, in the final analysis, you decide that you will have to format (thereby losing everything), then before you do, use 'fdisk' to re-partition your hard disk so as to have a primary partition for Windows (C:\)and a secondary partition for all your personal files and non-windows programs you might have (D:\). You will have to create shortcuts from the items on D:\ to your Desktop. But then when you have to re-format C:\ to install Windows again, you will not lose all your other files.Maybe you are not ready for this. But if you know someone who is knowledgeable, get them to partition your disk. Then you will have it ready for the time when you get brave and are ready to load it up with your stuff. If you screw up a few times as we all have done, you will eventually get as smart as the rest of us (hopefully much smarter). Don
