i want to re-format my old computer and install windows 95. I have been told that i can use a boot disk with a cd-rom driver (so that after i formatt the drive i can stil use the cd drive)
But i have a problem. currently i can not accses my cd-rom drive from dos (when i restart in dos mode), but it works from from windows. as far as dos is concerened i dont have a d: drive.
So when i try to use the win 98 boot disk that has cd drivers on it and chose the option "with cd-rom support" it fails and says that it cant find the disk drive.
what can i do?

The cdrom on the 486 probably connects through a sound card or other adapter card that the generic 98 drivers doesn't detect.
A driver may be loading in config.sys on the 486. Look through it or post back the contents of c:\config.sys.
Or you may be able to find a bootdisk at www.bootdisk.com with more extensive cdrom support that will recognize the drive.

I appears you have a CD that is not
regularly supported by the startup disk.We need a little detective work.
What is the make and model of the computer?
Was the CD Drive original equipment?
if not
Was the CD Drive added at the same time a
sound card was added?GoTo My Computer -> Control Panel -> System
Select Device Manager
Click CDROM - And Note What is Listed
This is the CDROM Windows thinks it has.Report Back

ya ! it suck's i have reformatted many harddrives as well as computers, the thing is
win98 does not have all the drivers for every cd-rom, i have run across a few,so i change the cd rom and it works. so if you have another cd-rom player change it.
"reformat a computer" duh!!!

Dave has it! the problem is in fact that the cd-rom drive is connencting thorugh the sound card. That is why even before attempting this dos could ever find the d: drive.
what now ? i will try boot disk.com first. any other ideas on how to over come this problem. (and why do people plug there cdrom drives into their sound cards anyway?)

If the computer has an OS installed now and the cdrom is working then a driver is being loaded from config.sys. If so, post back the contents of the config.sys and we could adapt a bootdisk using those drivers.
Otherwise, I've seen customized 95 boot disks that had multiple drivers for various cards. (I guess I'm repeating what I said in my first post.)
You might want to post back the model of the sound card and maybe a search of the manufacturer's site will locate the proper drivers.

The cd rom drive works in windows but not in dos. This is because the appropriate drivers have been deleted config.sys is calling files C:medvsn\mvsound.sys then medvsn\tslcdr.sys
this directory no longer exists! so on start up it has an error cant find files but in windows both the cd-drive and soundcard are recognised and work properly.
According to windows the sound card is a
madia vision pro audio spectrum and the CD-Rom drive si connected to a Trantor media vision SCSI Host controller. and the CD drive is a "mediavis CDR-H93MV
And i opend it up and i couldent find anywhere for the cd-rom drive to connect to on the motherboard it was copmpletly full up.

You can download the driver here:
http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads11/22935.html
It says it's an installation disk for both the sound card and the cdrom. You can use:
User name--drivers
password--allto get in. After you download it, unzip it to a floppy.
Boot the computer with a boot disk, preferably with the same OS as you want to install. At the a:\> prompt type:
format c:/s
That will erase everything on the HD and install the system files so it'll boot from the HD. Take the bootdisk out and reboot from the HD. Insert the floppy with the drivers and at the c:\> prompt type whatever command the instructions say you should use to install the drivers. I'm assuming the installation program will configure config.sys and autoexec.bat.
Take the floppy disk out and reboot again from the HD. If all goes right it should load the cd drivers. Then you should be able to install 95 from the cdrom.
Post back the results

O.K i allready found the same exact driver you mentioned from the web site. i went ahead. I made a boot disk that includes all the cd comands and it works i can accses the d: now. but when i say format c: it says bad command or file name? what is going on now?

The bootdisk doesn't have the format command on it.
The format command needs to be the same OS version as the system files on the flopppy so copy format.com from the window\command folder of the computer you made the boot disk from.
Or you can download a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com. You don't need cdrom support to format the hard drive so any bootdisk will do.

thanks man. again i jumped the gun and this out from another web site. I did it got windows instaled up and runing YEAHHHHH!!! but. the floppy drive is bugering up!!! when ever i try to load a disk it says that it is not formated (even though i now they are). why could this be? do i need a new driver?
By the way Thanks for your help mate

Glad you got it going.
Check the disks in another computer to make sure they're good. I assume the drive is good since you've used it before. You might go to performance in system in control panel to see if it's running in msdos mode. If so there's not a definite fix for it that I know of.
Win9x seems to have problems with floppy drives sometimes. You might do a search on google for floppy problems in general or msdos compatibility mode if that's the case.
