It's been so long since I have installed Win 98 I don't remember. I have an older laptop that I have formatted and attempting to install Win 98. I have made boot disks but can't seem to get past all the error messages. I am at a C: prompt but nothing seems to be working, keep getting invalid system disk etc. Please advise a site with detailed instructions and or offer help.
Thank you.

I've tried all kinds of "boot disks" and cannot make any headway. This machine is a Compaq Presario 1600 series if that is any clue. Getting desperate!

Describe each step you are doing up until the first error message. Let us know the error message and what bootdisk you are using.

Bringing you up to date. I downloaded Win98se boot disk and had success with that, to a point. I deleted Primary Dos Partition and formatted the drive. (format C: /S). I created a Primary Dos drive and after again formatted drive. I thought all was well and on track untill Win98se started to load, which it did until I got the following error message: Message SU0013
Cannot create files on start up drive. If you have HPFS or NTFS you must create a MS DOS boot partition. If you have LANtastic server or superStor compression disable it before running setup.

Thanks, confused/lost.

You need to do FDISK first, deleting the DOS partition and then creating it again. Normally you choose large disk suport (FAT32).

You then do FORMAT C: (no real need for /s) and install W98. Do not run FDISK again "after" FORMAT which sounds like what you did.

Derek,
I have no idea what's up with this machine but it would not load Win98 entirely, it would stop and spin it's wheels after about 16%. I tried several times, reformatting etc, with no luck. I ended up installing Win95 and then with an old copy of Win98 upgrade was able to install intirely with some difficulty. I had to skip a few files when it would "bog" down.
Thanks all for help/suggestions.
