I'm having some probs with windows - considering reinstalling. Without deleting the windows folder AND without having to reinstall all/most apps, can I
Reinstall only the 98se upgrade over the current files
Or, will I have to reinstall the 98 1st ed,(over the existing files)...then reinstall the 98se upgrade? What are the chances of not having to reinstall my apps in any of these scenarios? Thanks!

First of all, you should have no problem just installing from the Win98 SE upgrade disk. You will probably be prompted at some point to insert the Win98 1st ed. to verify that you can use the upgrade.
As for not having to reinstall your apps, it might be hit or miss for each app. However, it could be one of those apps, or a conflict that was caused by a faulty install, which is the cause of your problem.

Thanks. True, it could be on of the apps - I've done a lot of trouble shooting - haven't found a prob. Of the apps that seem to have problems, I've uninstalled / reinstalled them, replaced drivers (if the app says it's got a problem with one) and some (2 or 3) still refuse to work correctly, where as they did before.

You may be able to go back to a good copy of the registry .

Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computor .Select , Command prompt only .
After the C prompt , type , scanreg /restore
Follow the prompts and select a registry dated prior to the problems .

To improve on the 5 days MS have on registry backups , use the Cabrest system below & get 14 days .
http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/regback1.htmlFor those that find the above site confusing , here is what to do .
Alter MaxBackupCopies from 5 to 14 as per instructions at above site or it can be done this way .
Start > Find > Files or Folders , type scanr in the top space ( Named ) , make sure the 3rd
space ( Look in ) is set to where your operating system is ( usually C ) & press Enter .
Right click on Scanreg ( C:Windows > configuration settings ) & click on open & change from 5
to 14 . Close & save .Download the zipped copy of the Batch file from ,
http://www.pcnineoneone.com/downloads/cabrest.zipUnzip , copy & paste cabrest onto the top of C: in Windows Explorer .
Delete zip file , or save it on floppy , if you want it for others or the
future .Print the instructions below & stick on your comp in front of you , so
when you have to go back to a good copy of the registry , you don't
need to search for them .-------
Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMA pool message comes on ) or Press Ctrl
during bootup , depends on your computor .
Select , Command prompt only .Type in cabrest & press Enter , keep answering y & you will see a
table , which will allow you to select which CAB file to restore from .
So , for example , to restore from rb009 cab , you look at the table &
see 09 corresponds to the letter j . You type j & Not the number .
Follow instructions .Type win & press Enter to exit .
If after following the instructions to Restore , things arn't
working , go to an earlier date & try again .

i have a problem installing win 98 SE, it gives me an error - SUO168, something about an operating system already installed i need to get an upgrade... pls help

Jobstar, it looks like a problem I have seen when there is more than one hard drive with an operating system installed...is this the case here? Or more than one partition with an operating system?

Jobstar, rename win.com to win.old, then try again. Assuming everything goes OK, you can then safely delete win.old. If you encounter a problem, just rename win.old back to win.com.

Thanks to all who responded. All are good, useful, non-sarcastic suggestions. I really appreciate it.
