Can anybody explain to me how I can format my harddrive but still load windows 98 without using the cd rom. I have got the win 98 source files on the C: drive. I have been told to use the format C:/q/s to do a quick format but this will surely wipe the source files as well or am I wrong.

As you say, when you reformat everything goes. The only thing I can suggest is that you first copy your source files to goodness knows how many floppies. You would need to use a file splitting program because some files are too large - can point you to one if need be.

if you have a cd-rom you could just use a win98 startup diskette with cd-rom support. That way you could format then copy the files from the cd back to your hard drive and run setup from there. You can download the win98 startup diskette with cd-rom support at bootdisk.com

I think it depends on what kind of computer you have. I have a compaq, and it has quick restore on it, which esentially reformats, but it only takes it back to factory settings, so all the programs they installed, ie: windows, stays.

Why don't you forego the formatting and just whack every directory on the drive EXCEPT the one(2) holding your Win98 install CABS?
Check the setup options by typing setup /? .
There are a couple of switches that tell setup to forget about the boot floppies that are normally required and one to tell it what the source directory is.
This should essentially bring you back to a factory installation.
