This is a friends computer, they want to stay with 98 se cause they know it.
Computer was having display etc problems, etc being really slow ----
I suggested reinstalling windows -- computer is 4 years old so 4 years of stuff.
I did a clean install, went just fine but no modem, won't detect the modem and
even when I install - says installed - says working - but it doesnt. Also cant find PCI drivers and of course the display is stuck on 16 colors - tried to change that too and no luck.
believe it is all part of the same problem and believe it is something simple I am missing,
never had problems before when reinstalling windowsI have:
done a clean install
downloaded unofficial service pack and installed
downloaded more from ms site and installed
downloaded and installed mother board update & drivers
reinstalled windows (lol)
tried many times on the modem drivers ----(just not the prob)
deleted the pci problems from system/
reinstalled windows
removed modem
reinstalled windowsNothing so far has helped......
Hope someone out there has a thought...............

So... you just can't find the correct drivers, or is there some other problem?
Very likely the computer came with driver disks (wherever those might be)
Here's the MSI page for that model, installing the chipset drivers would be a good idea, likely the rest of the drivers are there tooWe've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

very likely the right drivers would fix everything.
I did download and install from msi the drivers and update,
am trying to find something for the processor but no luck yet.
the only disks "with" the computer were the 98se and one with the modem drivers.
I know when this gets figured out I will smack my head and go "duh" :)

The update from msi was for the motherboard,
could it possibly be drivers for the motherboard chipset??

If you don't have the correct chipset drivers installed, that can cause Windows to 'misbehave' - I've had a few MSI boards (2 or 3 anyways) - those required the 'VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers'
You may want to check out the Everest application - it can provide a wealth of information

>>>I know when this gets figured out I will smack my head and go "duh" :)<<<
That's the way you learn things. Things get better once your head starts to thicken from all the smacks you give it (at least mine did...)

am still going in circles -- the chipset drivers didnt help. did find something on the microsoft site that said 98se thinks the modem is a pci serial controller and to change the driver for that to the one for modem.
well the computer has created a
pci card
pci ethernet controller
pci mutimedia audio device
and a pci universal serial busall are listed under other devices with
the yellow exclamation error sign.but no pci serial controller.
I tried changing a couple of those and caused some errors when I tried to test the modem it created, lol
Am back to thinking it is the modem setup / drivers.

You just need the correct drivers - that's how Windows identifies various hardware items when it has to guess. The computer is newer than the OS, so those drivers aren't on the Windows disc
You already have the correct modem driver, but configuring a modem can be a lttle tricky, and it helps if the rest of the system is properly setup first.
Give Everest a shot if you can't find more specific drivers at the MSI site

I think it is time to start again and get all updates from M$, then install the latest VIA ChipSet Drivers for your Board.
Take out the modem whilst doing this and bin it then buy another dialup modem only a £5 ($8.00) with Drivers
The drivers for the on-board sound and graphics are available from MSI, the USB shoul;d be picked up by W98 if it is the SE version.

But first you have to know what you're looking for!

... kind of why I provided that link earlier in the post (days ago now)

lol
sorry !
I am not giving you enough info!
I have used everest and it at least gave me the correct versions to find drivers for.Though I do not know how to understand all the info it gives.
I should have posted right back and said I was doing what all of you suggested except for throwing it in the trash.Ok - had the correct modem drivers all along but the 'puter still doesnt recognize it, and still says it has found new pci card, pci ethernet controller, pci multimedia audio device and pci unversal serial bus - those I have not been able to tell it where to find drivers. Again all related to modem I think.
I have:
installed the via drivers
the s3 pro savage drivers
unofficial service pack
plus a couple more from msand I flashed the bios --
trying to check the cmos to see if anything is wrong there, but nothing jumps out to my inexperienced eye.
The display settings are working better - now have normal colors
so mainly just the modem.
One other strange thing - I tried to use the help troubleshooter to see about 32-bit and discovered none of the help troubleshooter buttons work, doesnt really show the button - just the square where it should be.
I think I havent enabled something I should of
Let me know if you have any ideas
Do you want me to post the everest report?
Or a specific part of it?
Let me know and thanks for all your input

Just rushing past:
The troubleshooter was disabled by MS in one of their security updates. I think they regarded the info as outdated.

I did take the modem out while I did the install, but am not sure if I had all the drivers installed when I put it back, had a hard time finding the driver for s3 pro savage -- drivers guide did have one but it was wrong, thought I had seen a right one there but never came back up on the search.
I can try pulling the modem back out and making sure everything is installed first, but still think I am missing something that should have been done

On post #16 you talk about the modem than list s3 pro savage drivers, just to let you know S3Pro Savage is for video not modems.
If you could post what everest says about the modem , do so, or any thing you know about it. Any other flag in Control Panel/System/Device Manager ?

Didn't mean to be confusing, also had display problems etc.
the modem is an intel(r)536ep
and I have the drivers, when I try to install it is the same time win98 finds the other 4 items,
tried reinstalling windows (again) with the modem out, did not help.
Everest shows it being there -- but I dont know why win98 isn't finding it.
Not sure what bus mastering means, ??
[ Intel 537EP Modem ]Device Properties:

Subsystem ID 8086-1000
Device Class 0703 (Communications Controller)
Revision 04
Fast Back-to-Back Transactions Supported, DisabledDevice Features:
66 MHz Operation Not Supported
Bus Mastering Disabled

It worked!!!!
I had downloaded 3 different files for the modem driver -- but hadn't thought to look for "modem chipset driver"
Thanks so much!!!
The pci mulimedia audio device and pci universal serial bus still have question marks, but getting the modem up and running was the main thing!

Good news. Maybe question marks are a similar issue. Sometimes deleting items with question marks then rebooting does the trick (err.... but at your risk LOL). Thx for popping back to let us know.
