Hi all

Every so often of late I get a BSOD with the message 'Fatal exception OE in VxD VMM(06) + 00004F14' the hex value is always the same and the VMM(6) seems to relate to the registry.

I had a virus (vbs/redlof) the other day, avg deleted it but I recon it changed/deleted a registry entry that belongs to some software I have installed causing the BSOD.

I have tried using Registry Search (searching for 00004F14)by Bobbi Flekman and this is the resulting notepad file which gives no clues:

REGEDIT4

; Registry Search by Bobbi Flekman
; Version: 1.0.1.4

; Results at 07/06/05 13:50:32 for strings:
; '00004f14'
; Strings excluded from search:
; (None)
; Search in:
; Registry Keys Registry Values Registry Data
; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE HKEY_USERS

; End Of The Log...

anybody know how I can find out what software is related to the entry so I can re-install it?? is there another search utility I can use that will give better results??

also there is another file causing bother, this happens quite often. It is the tvdebug.log I have read conflicting advice but really want to know is it safe to delete this file as I believe it was only created once I started accessing the Internet with this PC and allowing Windows to create a new one might be the solution??

Regards

M

Mark,

I do not know the answer to your question but perhaps this McAfee search may provide some good info.

However, in a related thread (I am unable to locate that thread now) I expressed concern about AVG being a detection tool versus an Anti-virus tool.

"I had a virus (vbs/redlof) the other day, avg deleted it"

I see almost the exact same words in many posts here at Computing.net stating that AVG detected a virus. This suggests to me that it is a detection tool and not an anti-virus (protection) tool.

You note that AVG detected the virus.
Do you believe that you had AVG installed at the time when you contracted the virus or was AVG installed in your efforts to rid your system of a suspected virus?

Thank you,
Bryan

Hi Bryan thank you for your reply.

I already had AVG 7 (free) installed as my AV protection. I was attempting to help here:

http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/15931.html">

and contracted the virus when I viewed source in Netscape 7.1, AVG 7 popped up the alert and after removal procedures VBS/Redlof now resides in AVG's virus vault.

The virus was located in C:\Windows\application data\mozilla\profiles\default\yrramwe1.slt\cache\fca11d12d01

I think your assumption about the Registry is not correct.

'Fatal exception OE in VxD VMM(06) + 00004F14'
Says the failure was at an offset of 00004f14 hex in the 6th module in the VXD file.

A common reason for this sort of problem is a wrong level of the VXD file. But since it appears to be intermittent, I guess that's not the reason in this case. Sorry that I can't be any more help.

Thanks Ham30.

'A common reason for this sort of problem is a wrong level of the VXD file'

I have to admit I was just guessing, I have no idea as to what most the BSOD error messages relate to, unfortunately.

When I say intermittent it I can get the BSOD whenever I choose, and less often if left to it's own devices. Right clicking and selecting properties on some files causes the BSOD as does running Norton Utils 2000 on occasion.

Is there a solution, where should I be looking?

since the failures are not limited to one program it's hard to suggest a fix. The fact that it fails when selecting 'properties' would tend to make me suspect a windows problem. If it was me I would try the following:

Try a Internet Explorer 'repair'. (Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>IE>Add/Remove>Repair.
The reason I suggest this is because IE and Windows Explorer are intertwined.

Reinstall win98 'on top'
This will cause loss of all windows updates.

I've had the same problem for about a month under Win98, but I've managed to track down the cause - AVG.

Things finally came to a head a few days ago when I started getting the same fatal exception every time I turned on my PC.

Luckily I managed to find one single reference online via Google to the exact same error message and it was in a post on the AVG Free forum. I uninstalled AVG in Safe Mode and haven't had a problem since.

Worth a try if you're still suffering the same problem!
